Trainers,
In recent discussions within the Pokémon GO community, many players have expressed concerns about the consistency and frequency of in-game events. This regular influx of events has contributed to high levels of event fatigue and fear of missing out (FOMO). Interestingly, it appears that the game feels almost more engaging and enjoyable outside of these event periods. Going into GO Fest season, we see some of the busiest months of the GO calendar… but is it too much?
When events are not running, players have reported experiencing a broader variety of spawns. For example, recently, players have encountered wild Charizards, caught wild Swamperts, and seen both wild Nidoking and Alakazam on the nearby radar. The diverse and unexpected spawns made the game feel fresh and exciting, encouraging genuine exploration. The joy of stumbling upon rare Pokémon, such as a Jangmo-o during windy weather, brings back the thrill reminiscent of encountering wild Dragonites in the early days of the game.
During events, however, the spawn variety often becomes monotonous. For instance, during the Weather Week event, while Stardust rewards were boosted, the Pokémon spawns were not particularly interesting. Similarly, an event focused on ninth-generation starters led to a lacklustre variety in the wild spawn pool. Without the debut of a new meta-relevant mon or shiny, the event spawns do not capture much interest. That said, some events, like the Lunar New Year event with its dragon-themed spawns, have been well-received.
Players have noted that it has become increasingly rare to experience non-event days. Seasonal spawns on these rare non-event days are now perceived as special events themselves. There is a growing desire within the community for a better balance between event-driven spawns and the more organic, diverse spawns of non-event periods.
What is the Solution?
A suggestion from the community is that event spawns should not completely overshadow regular spawns. The predictability of seeing the same limited Pokémon during events has led to decreased motivation to log in and play. Moreover, the absence of regional spawns during events is another point of frustration. Players travelling to new regions hope to encounter new Pokémon specific to those areas but are often disappointed when event spawns dominate the radar.
Spawn diversity remains a significant issue for many players. The game’s enjoyment is significantly enhanced when a variety of Pokémon appear regularly, not just during specific events. However, not all players share this sentiment. Some appreciate events for making rare Pokémon more accessible. Events can provide opportunities to catch Pokémon like Beldum more frequently, making it easier to farm for candies and evolve them. These guaranteed spawns during events can be appealing compared to the uncertainty of encountering such rare Pokémon outside of events.
Striking a Balance
While events in Pokémon GO add excitement and opportunities, the game needs a better balance to prevent it from feeling like a constant grind. Events are enjoyable, but the game can become overwhelming when scheduled back-to-back with little to no downtime. Incorporating breaks between events would provide much-needed breathing room for players. These breaks allow players to manage their storage, resupply on Poké Balls, and enjoy seasonal spawns without the event pool dominating the list—especially important for encountering regional spawns.
From a personal standpoint, having more breaks between events would be preferable. This approach would allow each event to benefit from a higher “quality budget,” making them more meaningful and engaging, rather than a series of potentially low-effort, back-to-back events. The game does not need continuous events to remain interesting. Players would still engage in activities like raids, utilizing their daily passes for interesting challenges, whether from regular or shadow raid pools. They would also continue to aim for their 50 daily coins and other in-game goals without the pressure of an ongoing event.
Final notes
The community seems divided on the best approach. While some players advocate for more non-event periods to enjoy diverse spawns, others appreciate events’ predictability and targeted opportunities. Striking a balance between event-driven content and maintaining the excitement of diverse, spontaneous spawns could potentially enhance the overall experience of Pokémon GO for all players.
