Master League Primarina: Charm or Waterfall?

Primarina

Come August 31, 2024, Pokémon GO can grind the Community Day event to catch a Primarina with Hydro Cannon. Boasting impressive stats and a formidable Water/Fairy type combination, this Gen 7 starter is all set to be an asset to your PvP and PvE teams.

While the powerful Hydro Cannon is the secret sauce behind Primarina’s dominance, particularly in the big, bad Master League (ML), trainers are left scratching their heads over a certain conundrum – Charm or Waterfall, which Fast attack to use?

Even though Hydro Cannon is set in stone, the Fast attack and the accompanying second Charged attack are both pretty important per se, to the extent that they give Primarina different builds to use.

Keep in mind that Primarina also gains its signature move, Sparkling Aria, starting from its Community Day. However, the premise of this write-up is figuring out the best Fast Move along with Hydro Cannon and a suitable Fairy Charged Move.

With Hydro Cannon’s sheer power and viability in the Master League, it’s the go-to Water type Charged Move, and you’re still left with a decision about its best Fast Move.

So, which is the best Primarina build for the Master League? Let’s find out!

Primarina’s role in the Master League

Aside from Togekiss, Primarina is arguably the go-to non-Legendary Fairy type designed to take on the ever-rampant Dragon, Dark, and occasionally seen Fighting types in the ML meta.

What makes Primarina a special fairy is its Water typing, taking trainers prepared for usual Fairy types off-guard.

  • For one, it’s not weak to Steel type attacks, helping it take on Dialga and Metagross’ shenanigans

  • It doesn’t have to fear Melmetal’s dreaded Rock Slide

  • Beats Mamoswine

  • Despite being weak to Zarude, evens it up with Fairy moves

  • The major threat is Electric but Togekiss shares the same weakness

Primarina winds up being the most unpredictable and unique Fairy types in the Master League, and the inclusion of Hydro Cannon is the icing on the cake.

Charm and Waterfall PvP stats

Charm

DPT (Damage Per Turn): 5.00

EPT (Energy Per Turn): 2.00

Cooldown: 1.50sec

Waterfall

DPT (Damage Per Turn): 4.00

EPT (Energy Per Turn): 2.66

Cooldown: 1.50sec

Both are powerful Fast Moves, with Charm hitting harder and Waterfall being faster, the margins being narrow.

Also, as mentioned earlier, Hydro Cannon is a given. For the second Charged attack, the ideal Fairy move to use calls for two considerations:

  • With Charm, using the 45 energy Disarming Voice is convenient. This move even edges out the 55 energy Stone Edge made popular by Togekiss. More importantly, Disarming Voice gets STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus).

  • Waterfall’s higher energy gains make the deadly Moonblast more feasible, although you can still go ahead with a quicker Disarming Voice as well.

In short, Waterfall gives Primarina more breadth, flexibility, and coverage against threats Togekiss usually struggles against. It’s like a smooth wine.

Charm gives Primarina more depth, raw power, and shock value against threats Togekiss usually struggles against. It’s like a strong beer.

Primarina with Charm, Hydro Cannon, and Disarming Voice

This is the old flavor of the underrated ML Primarina, boosted to new heights with the addition of Hydro Cannon, although only in the (0-0) shield scenario as (1-1) remains more or less the same.

  • Needless to say, this version takes the fight to the premier Dragon types of the meta, including the dreaded Dialga, Palkia, and also their Origin formes. These Legendaries can be cut down to size in all shield scenarios by Charm.

  • Aside from all the top dragons, Charm Primarina threatens Yveltal, Mamoswine, and Zacian. That said, it loses to Togekiss and Xerneas.

  • Due to Charm hitting like a pillow, Steel types make quick work of Primarina.

Primarina with Waterfall, Hydro Cannon, and Moonblast

Disarming Voice is quicker in the arsenal of a Waterfall Primarina, but when the opportunity is rife with Moonblast, why not take it?

Primarina takes on its scariest ML avatar with Waterfall, Hydro Cannon, and Moonblast, in the (1-1) shield scenario, boasting a vast improvement from Charm. It’s also a huge hit in (0-0) though it falters in (2-2).

  • With Waterfall, Primarina obviously struggles against some Dragon types, narrowly taking down Dialga and also Palkia, but still dominating Dragonite.

  • It annihilates Excadrill, Ursaluna, Landorus Therian, and also Rhyperior, which is bound to find increased usage thanks to Mud Slap’s buff.

  • Best of all, it beats Fairy types like Togekiss, Xerneas, Zacian, and Sylveon.

Should you pick Charm or Waterfall for Primarina in Pokémon GO Master League?

Waterfall is overall the better move for Primarina in Pokémon GO’s Master League.

The feasibility of using Moonblast more easily alongside the synergy with Hydro Cannon is remarkable. Don’t forget that Hydro Cannon costs only 40 energy, and Primarina enjoys using it quickly with Waterfall, as compared with Charm.

This build truly sets Primarina class apart from other Fairy types, but keep in mind that it does pretty well with Charm as well. Ultimately, the choice is yours and you won’t regret either but Waterfall is certainly going to be more fun.

All the best for Popplio Community Day trainers, may you get the Hundo/Shundo you’re eager for.
