Trainers, it looks like Niantic is doing some behind the scenes updates to difficulty of the Max Battles, or at least some portion of the player base is experiencing this. A growing number of players reported on Reddit that 1-Star Max Battles feel significantly more difficult.
Could Niantic be tweaking the difficulty curve ahead of some big October updates? We have no idea, but let’s dive into the details and see what the community is saying.
What’s Happening?
Word on the street is that 1-star Max Battles are much more difficult, with Bosses hitting harder and requiring more work to go down. Trainers who were used to cruising through battles with barely a scratch are now finding themselves fainting Pokémon that used to dominate.
Here’s a quick rundown of what’s been observed :
- Increased difficulty: Players are reporting longer battles and stronger opponents.
-
Higher damage output: Attacks are now chunking off a significant portion of health.
-
Varied experiences: Not everyone is seeing the same changes, suggesting this might be a gradual rollout or A/B testing.
The community is not happy with the silence
Naturally, Trainers are voicing their thoughts—both good and bad. Here’s what some are saying:
I noticed my Lvl 35 Charmeleon took a huge hit from a Bulbasaur’s Sludge Bomb due to dodging a bit too late with the visual cue and it did almost a whole third of my health. Was baffled how much it did when attacks from Wooloo and Skwovet merely tickled – source
I dont think its completely unfair to have T1 difficulty increased, it was very easy to complete previously. What is unfair however is the communication that we did not receive regarding this change. Its common curtsy for a develop to announce basic information about the game, but I guess this aligns with their regular communication style (silence) they seem always keen to disappoint. I guess people are going to complain either way – source
One of the biggest complaints in the community isn’t just the difficulty increase, but the radio silence from Niantic. This isn’t the first time Niantic has made stealth changes without giving Trainers a heads-up, and it likely won’t be the last. There’s clearly some confusion around what’s happening, and once again, it is solely Niantic’s lack of communication to blame.
Why did the difficulty increase?
Honestly, it’s hard to answer this question without knowing what goes on behind the scenes at Niantic, but it is likely that the new difficulty could be a result of internal metrics and decisions.
Here’s a few reasons we think could be the root cause of the increase, or were at least contributing factors:
- Balancing for G-Max Raids: Niantic might be fine-tuning the difficulty curve in preparation for a bigger challenge—like Gigantamax Raids or new legendary Dynamax bosses.
-
Canary testing: Some players are seeing the new difficulty, while some aren’t, which suggests Niantic could be testing these changes on a subset of players before a global rollout. Maybe this is just temporary?
-
Unintended Side Effect?: Let’s not forget, Niantic has a history of “accidental” adjustments. Maybe this could be a mistake on their end. We’ll see.
In any case, it looks like something bigger is cooking behind the scenes, and it will likely take some more time for Niantic to settle into an implementation they are happy with. Max Battles have changed on a weekly basis since launch, so this is not surprising to us.
Stay tuned for updates!
