During GO Fest 2024 we saw the introduction of Fusions in Pokémon GO with Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings Necrozma. Not only this, but these fusions had special attacks which are Adventure Effects too!

How were Fusions introduced to Pokémon GO?

Necrozma, the Prism Pokémon, made its Pokémon GO in raids during Pokémon GO Fest 2024. Also starting from GO Fest 2024, you can fuse Necrozma with Solgaleo or Lunala to get Dusk Mane Necrozma and Dawn Wings Necrozma!

Check out our GO Hub Guide to Fusions for everything you need to know about fusions currently in Pokémon GO.

Fusions in the Mainline Games

Let’s have a recap of what fusions have been seen in the mainline games. There are some spoilers in the following paragraphs so read at your own peril.

Kyurem Fusion With Reshiram/Zekrom

While Kyurem made its debut in the original Pokémon Black and White games, its ability to fuse with other Pokémon was introduced in the sequels. In Black 2 and White 2’s postgame, players could catch Kyurem along with either Reshiram or Zekrom, and then obtain the DNA Splicers item to enable fusion. This item reappeared in Sword and Shield’s DLC, serving the same purpose of fusing Kyurem with Reshiram to create White Kyurem or with Zekrom to create Black Kyurem. Both forms boast impressive stats, but White Kyurem stands out in Sword and Shield for its exceptional type coverage and one of the highest base Special Attack stats, making it particularly effective in Max Raid Battles.

Necrozma fusion with Lunala/Solgaleo

Generation 7 introduced the Ultra Beasts, which, despite their mixed reception, brought the series its second fusion capability. This feature was added in the follow-up games, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, where Necrozma could fuse with either Solgaleo or Lunala. Fusing with Solgaleo transforms Necrozma into its Dusk Mane form, adding Steel to its Psychic typing, while fusing with Lunala changes it into its Dawn Wings form, adding Ghost typing. The items required for these fusions are the N-Solarizer and N-Lunarizer.

Calyrex Fusion With Glastrier/Spectrier

Calyrex, the cover Legendary for The Crown Tundra, is the latest Pokémon with fusion capabilities. In The Crown Tundra’s story, players learn that Calyrex was a powerful ancient king and are tasked with reuniting him with his former steed. Eventually, players create the Reins of Unity item, allowing Calyrex to fuse with either Glastrier or Spectrier. Unlike previous fusions, this is more akin to one Pokémon riding another, yet both fused forms are formidable additions to any team. Ice Rider and Shadow Rider Calyrex not only boast extremely high base stats but also retain the abilities of both base Pokémon, marking a first for the series.

When could we see more Fusions in Pokémon GO?

If Black and White Kyurem seem familiar… you’d be correct. They were accidentally released in Pokémon GO in December 2023 and promptly removed from all accounts that had caught one.

These two highly anticipated legendary Pokémon were accidentally released as rewards in the game’s GO Battle League (GBL). Niantic soon addressed the situation through their official channels, clarifying that the appearance of Black Kyurem and White Kyurem in the GBL was unintentional. Consequently, both Pokémon were removed from the GBL rewards, removed from trainers accounts, and they are currently no longer available.

It seems likely that the next GO Tour will be Unova, in February. Coincidentally, Black and White Kyurem are from Gen 5, Unova. Although we originally saw Black and White Kyurem encountered in their fused forms, I doubt it will be like this going forward. Now we have the fusion mechanic and fused form raids, the future introduction of fusions will likely follow this format.

Although Niantic only kept us waiting 5 months for more Adventure Effects moves, the release of Black and White Kyurem is so highly anticipated that it would have to be at a major event such as GO Tour or a GO Fest.

How good are Black and White Kyurem?

  • Kyurem (Black)

  • Kyurem (White)

The potential that Black Kyurem has is what makes this release even more exciting, as it is one of the best Legendary Pokémon in the game. Black Kyurem is a Dragon and Ice type Pokémon, and it’s a monster through and through.

With 5206 Max CP, 310 Attack, 245 Stamina, and 183 Defense, Black Kyurem is the fourth DPS non-Mega Dragon type in the game, topping even Rayquaza in its non mega-evolved form. It falls after Origin Palkia, Shadow Salamence and Origin Dialga. Think of Black Kyurem as if Rayquaza was on steroids but unable to Mega Evolve.

The story is even better if we take a look at Black Kyurem as an Ice-type attacker. Black Kyurem is the best Ice-type in the game, bar none, followed by White Kyurem, Galarian Zen Darmanitan, and then regular Kyurem.

You think Shadow Mamoswine is good? Black Kyurem has higher DPS and almost 40% better survivability than Mamoswine, making it the king of Ice types throughout all currently known Pokémon in Pokémon GO.

White Kyurem is overall slightly weaker than Black Kyurem, despite both of them having the exact same stats. The difference comes down to move sets, as White Kyurem got significantly worse moves in our opinion. Here’s how their fast and charge moves stack up:

Kyurem (Black)

Kyurem (White)

Fast moves

Dragon Tail Dragon

Dragon Breath Dragon

Shadow Claw Ghost

Steel Wing Steel

Charge moves

Outrage Dragon

Dragon Pulse Dragon

Blizzard Ice

Blizzard Ice

Stone Edge Rock

Ancient Power Rock

Iron Head Steel

Focus Blast Fighting

It goes without saying, but White Kyurem really got the short end of the stick here, at least for Gyms and Raids:

  • Outrage has better DPS than Dragon Pulse by nearly 7%

  • Ancient Power has less than half the DPS of Stone Edge

  • Focus Blast is an odd Fighting type move that we don’t understand why you would run

For PvP, the jury is still out, but Master League meta is wild anyway, so we don’t really know what will happen there.
