Magnezone

You think of Magnezone in Pokémon GO and one of my immediate thoughts would be about how underrated it is! This Electric/Steel Pokémon looks great and functions efficiently in both PvE and PvP

With that said, let’s find out how good Magnezone and its Shadow are in the meta, starting with its basic data as well as pros in Pokémon GO.

Magnezone stats and matchups

Get a load of those resistances. 12 resistances, which is the highest in the game!

It only has three weaknesses, although it’s double weak to Ground type attacks. These weaknesses are atypical of a Steel type Pokémon so no real surprises there as well.

Magnezone in PvE

There aren’t too many top-notch Electric types in the first place, so there’s no mob competition as such.

Here are the top Electric type options in Pokémon GO without considering Megas and Shadows, except Shadow Magnezone (for reference):

Xurkitree (Thunder Shock | Discharge)

Thundurus Therian (Volt Switch | Wildbolt Storm)

Magnezone (Spark | Wild Charge)

Regular Magnezone is outclassed by a bunch of Legendaries in DPS while it’s bulkier than Electivire. Shadow Magnezone, on the other hand, is a top 3 pick, with jaw-dropping DPS figures and goo enough TDO.

All in all, Magnezone is an excellent pick and is a cheaper Pokémon to power up when considering the tremendous Candy XL costs and difficulty in obtaining them for Legendaries.

Magnezone also holds an edge over other Electric types when facing Raid Boss Kyogre (base as well as Primal) with the powerful Blizzard.

This Ice type move takes out Zekrom and Thundurus Therian, and Xurkitree takes heavy neutral damage. Magnezone resists Blizzard and is overall the top counter to beat Blizzard Kyogre

Not to mention, several Water types tend to have Ice type Charge attacks in their movepool and Magnezone is amazing at dealing with them without dodging too much.

Shadow Magnezone is phenomenal and will always remain a top-tier pick for Electric type damage while even boasting decent survivability for a Shadow! Keep in mind that Shadow Pokémon get a 1.2x multiplier to their Attack and a 0.83x to their Defense.

Magnezone in PvP

Magnezone’s insane list of resistances, good moveset, and shield-baiting potential make it a safe switch-in and an unpredictable threat. Shadow Magnezone is even better, in fact!

It is usable in all three PvP Leagues and can come in clutch to get you unexpected wins.

Great League

Magnezone takes full advantage of its perks to serve as a fantastic Great League mon! Aside from usual suspects like Toxapex, Azumarill, Clefable, and Shadow Feraligatr, it also takes out formidable opponents such as Malamar, Ferrothorn, Oranguru, Wigglytuff, Shadow Sableye, Shadow Drapion, and Carbink! This is all due to the burst damage from Wild Charge.

This high-damage tactic gets even more proficient when using Shadow Magnezone, who also grabs extra wins against Cresselia, Greninja, Abomasnow, and Charjabug!

Ultra League

Magnezone is still a threat in the Ultra League, but the growing presence of Swampert, Gastrodon, Giratina, Golurk, and Incinerate users is worrisome.

However, it’s still pretty neat, stacking up wins against Tentacruel, Shadow Dragonite, Feraligatr, Galarian Weezing, and Malamar.

That said, each has some unique wins that the other can’t get. Regular Magnezone beats Talonflame and Cresselia while Shadow Magnezone gets the best of Venusaur and Lickilicky.

Master League

Magnezon fares pretty well in the Master League though it kind of goes down compared to the lower PvP Leagues thanks to the rise of numerous Legendaries and Pseudo Legendaries with far superior stats makes it a bit underwhelming. But, that doesn’t mean it’s bad… in fact, it’s more of a dark horse that can pull off some cool wins.

Both win against the likes of Togekiss, Primarina, Yveltal, Tapu Bulu, Kyogre, Mewtwo, Palkia

Coming to unique wins, regular Magnezone only gets Melmetal and Ho-Oh while Shadow Magnezone gets Palkia Origin, Dusk Mane Necrozma, Dawn Wings Necrozma, Dragonite, and Zacian Hero!

Shadow Magnezone is clearly better than the regular version across all three Leagues.

Conclusion

Magnezone is very good in Pokémon GO, especially Shadow Magnezone!

It’s worth collecting Candy XL for this popular Electric/Steel type, and if you have a Shadow Magnezone with good IVs, don’t hesitate to max it out. This investment will pay rich dividends in Raids as well as the Master League.

Even if you don’t have one with 15 ATK and high DEF and HP IVs, go ahead and try it out in the Great and Ultra League for sure!

Have fun and all the best, trainers!
